Tenth ASEF University, Tokyo, Japan, May - June 2004
The tenth edition of the ASEF University (AU10) was co-organised with Keio University from 22 May – 5 June 2004 in Tokyo, Japan, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan.
The theme of the AU10 was ‘ 'Enlarging European Union and Asia ''. During the two-week programme, a total of 38 participants from 35 universities in 23 ASEM member countries participated in the programme. They attended lecturers delivered by the academics and practitioners from Asia and Europe, which were divided into two parts: (1) Enlarging EU and the Future and Europe; and (2) Regional Integration in Asia and Asia-Europe Relations.
For the first time, two symposia, one on "Enlarging EU and the Future of Europe", and the other on "Regional Integration in Asia and Asia-Europe Relations", were organised in line with the programme theme. The former touched on EU-related issues such as the impact of EU enlargement on European economic, monetary, and political integration as well as the less integrated and more contentious field of security while the latter focused on EU's approach and contributions to the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).
One of the highlights of the AU10 programme was a special lecture by Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, on the occasion of receiving the honorary doctorate from Keio University.
Apart from academic lectures, the cultural programme included visits to the Great Buddha in Kamakura, historic district of Asakusa and the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation etc. Participants also attended a performance of the ancient Japanese art form of Kabuki as well as an overnight stay in a traditional Japanese Inn (Ryokan).
