Eighth ASEF University, Warwick, United Kingdom, September 2003
The Eighth ASEF University (AU8) was co-organised with the Center for the Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation (CSGR), University of Warwick, from 7 to 21 September 2003 in Coventry, United Kingdom.
Gathering a total of 34 students from 33 universities in 23 ASEM member countries, the two-week congress explored the theme of The Future of International Order: Unilateralism or Multilateralism?, prompting student participants to ascertain the prospective role of multilateralism pursuant to the 9-11 attack and the US-led war against Iraq. Over four modules, students were given insights into the fundamentals of world order and the roles of global organisations such as the UN, the WTO, the IMF and the World Bank in the contemporary world. To complement the academic package, students were also introduced to a full-day scenario-planning exercise that revolves around the programme theme of the AU8.
The cultural mode of the AU8 programme facilitated students with the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the rich history and culture of England through visits to Oxford, London, and Stratford-upon-Avon. Main cultural highlights included historical structures of the St. Paul's Cathedral, the Tower Bridge, Shakespeare's birthplace, and the Christi Corpus College, headed by Sir Tim Lankester, the ASEF Governor for the United Kingdom.
